And hold firmly to the rope of Allaah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allaah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allaah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided. [3:103]

We are so fortunate that Allaah kept the Sahaabah united such that they stood together against their enemies and so Islaam reached us. Read the seerah (biography of the Prophet-SAW- and perhaps you'll appreciate this point.
Today we hear many calls towards unity, but sadly many of them make this call without qualifying; therefore, they claim it's important to be "united" and not criticze one another even if we disagree on matters. Certainly, if we disagree on matters where there is room for differences of opinion it is fine. However, when we differ regarding basic matters (such as in 'aqeedah) we cannot turn a blind eye. It rather becomes necessary for us to advise and point out the errors and remaining silent is unacceptable.
We should remember the favour of Allaah on this ummah; beforethe coming of the Prophet (SAW), the Arabs were at each other's throats. Then when they submitted (accepted Islaam) and united upon ISLAAM, they became like one body. It was indeed Allaah's favour that brought their hearts together while they were heading towars the hellfire.
We should alway remember Allaah's favours upon us (with our hearts and tongues), especially that He brought us to Islaam and guided us. Indeed, being grateful is a means of maintaining a gift/favour.
2) Uniting the Muslims is a favour of Allaah. We cannot achieve unity ourselves.
3) "allafa bayna quloobihim" So from this we learn that bonds of love and brotherhood are between hearts, and feelings are in hearts and not in minds.
4) I wonder what this fire refers to. Does it mean being disunited is a cause for being thrown in hellfire? Or does it mean unity is a means of protection from hellfire? Maybe it means that when people are united they will help themselves and each other to remain steadfast? Maybe this is referring to the merits of a jamaa'?
5) Being united is something that leads to guidance?
