And never say of anything, "Indeed, I will do that tomorrow," Except [when adding], "If Allaah wills." And remember your Lord when you forget [it] and say, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to what is nearer than this to right conduct." [18:23-24]
7) Alhamdulillaah, I just understood one more of the many rich lessons of Surah Kahf which helps me to understand why we are advised to read this every Friday - there are so many lessons we need to remind ourselves on a regular basis... inshaAllaah may Allaah guide us to what is nearer to right conduct!
5) As humans, we are likely to forget to say inshaAllaah sometimes (thus proving we cannot even do such a simple thing like remembering without Allaah's help!). So we should remember Allaah when we are reminded of this.
6) So when we remember the 2 lessons above: i) we rely on Allaah for even the smallest need ii) we cannot even remember to remember Allaah without His help then these 2 bring us to the humbling realization that we cannot even perfect our remembrance of Allaah. So we then hope and aspire to be guided by Allaah to what is nearer to right conduct, knowing we will only be able to approach right conduct, because perfection is only with Allaah.
1) We are reminded that we cannot take for granted our ability to do anything. So when we intend to do something in future we should say inshaAllaah (if Allaah wills).
We may not even be alive tomorrow, or we may not have the ability to do the thing, or somehow we may not get around to doing it. So even for something simple, we cannot be confident we can do it unless Allaah wills.
2) This is a reminder to us that we rely and depend completely on Allaah for the smallest of smallest of our needs and abilities.
3) This brings about a kind of humility in man before Allaah as we acknowledge this.
4) Remember Allaah when you forget, this is also connected to the previous part of the verse, because when we acknowledge our complete dependence on Allaah for every small and big need, then we would need to remember Him alot.
