Contemplation [9:40]

E-mail Print PDF
If you do not aid the Prophet - Allaah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allaah is with us." And Allaah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allaah - that is the highest. And Allaah is Exalted in Might and Wise. [9:40]

Brother Eyad made the point that they would have been able to go from Makkah to Madinah in no time. Indeed, if we think about it, during Israa wal Meraj, the prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam was taken on a journey from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to the heavens with the permission of Allaah all this happened in one night.

Similarly, if Allaah willed, the hijrah could also be done in that way, he could just be transported safely and be dropped in Madinah. But it is the wisdom of Allaah that he did hijrah in the way he did and in the company of Abu Bakr.

The story of the hijrah is packed with lessons for us, and one of the lessons is that Allaah is able to do whatever He wills, He does not need our help to aid the prophet. But whatever we do to support the prophet (e.g. to defend him, to convey his message), it is for our own benefit. And secondly we can hope for Allaah's assistance, because after all nothing is possible without the permission of Allaah

in this Ayah Allah the Exalted, is requesting us to give aid and victory to his prophet (SAW). and if we do not then it is not a problem because Allah the Exalted already aided him. however, the one who loses is us. we see now a days that our beloved prophet is being insulted by the non believers in many ways, then we should ask oursleves what we've done to aid and give vitory to our prophet. did we tell those nonbelivers the truth about our prophet? maybe it us to blame. we should really ponder upon this. another lesson from this ayah is that we have to do what we have to do and then depend and rely on Allah. the Prophet was able to go from Makah to Madina in no time but we see that he left his house at night and stayed in the cave for few days to teach us a lesson.

The verse is general in nature. That is, if you do not assist the deen (religion), because the aayah was revealed when a group hesitated when it came to joining the battle of Tabuk. Therefore, Muslims at any time should be willing to stand up for and defent their religion and their Prophet (SAW).

4) When we know the word of Allaah is the highest and Islaam is the best religion, then why do we feel the need to justify our obedience?
"I eat halaal because it is healthier and more humane"
"I wear hijab so I never have a bad hair day"
"I wear abaya because it is so easy, I don't have to decide what to wear"
We do these actions out of obedience to Allaah. We certainly benefit from the wisdoms of the actions which we may or may not know, but the reason for doing the action is obedience, and we should be proud that Allaah has given us opportunities to obey Him.

3) The story of the hijrah is one of the most touching accounts which demonstrate to us how much we should love the prophet. Allaah was already protecting the prophet, he did not need Abu Bakr. But Abu Bakr took his responsibility so seriously, and he would keep moving, sometimes being in front of him and sometimes behind. When the prophet asked him why he did this he replied, sometimes I fear they will attack you from the front, then I come to the front, and sometimes I fear they will attack you from the back and then I come behind you.

He did not care if anyone attacked him or he lost his life in protecting the prophet. His fear was not for his own safety, but that of the prophet.

This ayah has recorded Abu Bakr's sincerity and the reassurance the prophet gave him.

1) When we worship Allaah, we benefit ourselves, Allaah does not need our worship. Similarly, Allaah does not need our help to defend the prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam or to spread the deen. We ultimately benefit ourselves if we do.

2) We are reminded of the time when the prophet sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam did hijrah to Madinah accompanied by Abu Bakr. When they were in the cave and Abu Bakr was frightened for the safety of the prophet, he (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) reassured him with these words.

The non-Muslims up until this day insult the Messenger of Allaah, Muhammad (SAW), and it is a duty upon the Muslims to defend his honour in the manner they are capable. However, if we are not willing, then don't think Allaah needs us to do so. For indeed Allaah assisted him at the most difficult of times as mentioned in the aayah.
No matter how much the disbelievers insult Islaam and the prophet (SAW), and no matter what they do to deter people from Islaam, they will ultimately fail! The religion of Islaam is undoubtedly the truth and the only true religion. It is superior to all other religions as we learn at the conclusion of the aayah.
