Sacrifice! Part 2

1. Can One Animal Be Shared?

There are many opinions and scattered rules pertaining to this issue so I will summarize and try to be as clear and concise as possible. Let us begin with what is agreed upon (i.e. there is no debate concerning it). If each member of a household were to offer a sacrifice on his/her own behalf there is no difference of opinion that each one receives the reward for his/her sacrifice Inshaa Allaah. This is the case for one who offers a goat, lamb or a share (1/7) in a camel or a cow. So in this case, each individual purchases an animal or a share (1/7) in an animal (cow or camel) on his/her own.

The next issue is whether or not a man can include his entire household in his intention (for earning reward of the sacrifice), whether he is slaughtering a goat, sheep (lamb) or he takes a share in a cow or camel. The Hanafee scholars do not see this as being valid; however, the majority of scholars do. It would appear from the evidence found in the sunnah that the opinion of the majority is most correct Inshaa Allaah.

Sacrifice!

All praise and thanks belong to Allaah, and may the peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the most noble of all the prophets and messengers.

وَمَنْ يُعَظِّمْ شَعَائِرَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهَا مِنْ تَقْوَى الْقُلُوبِ (الحج: 32)

And whoever honors the symbols of Allāh – indeed, it is from the piety of hearts. (al-Hajj:32)

Certainly, honoring the symbols of Allaah (salient feautures of Islaam) is a sign of piety, and since the udh-hiyah (sacrifice offered at ‘Eid al-Adh-ha) is one such symbol which occurs annually, we have decided to gather here some important matters and questions related to this sh’eerah (symbol/salient feature). May it be of benefit and may Allaah reward our scholars who gathered these issues and made it easy for us to compile them.

The Ten Days of Thul Hijjah

Virtues and Recommended Deeds

In the name of Allaah and may the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon the one after whom there is no Prophet, Muhammad-sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

From the favours of Allaah upon His slaves is that He has placed for them throughout the year “seasons for obedience”; times during which they can increase their righteous deeds and during which they can compete to do that which will draw them closer to Allaah. The fortunate one is he who takes advantage of these seasons and does not let them simply pass by. Of these seasons is the “ten days of Thul Hijjah”. The Prophet- sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam- testified to these being the best days of the year and encouraged his followers to perform righteous deeds during them. As a matter of fact, Allaah took an oath by these days, and that alone is sufficient to indicate their importance and virtue since the Great does not swear by anything unless it also is of great value.

Abandoned Sunnahs 5 - Rinsing the Mouth after Drinking Milk

Ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) drank some milk then called for some water. Once he got the water he rinsed his mouth then said, "It has fat."
[Collected by Bukhari 211 and Muslim 358]

Lessons from this hadith:

Imam An-Nawwawee said," This hadeeth confirms it is recommended to rinse the mouth after drinking milk." [Sharh Saheeh Muslim ]

Abu Dawud mentioned this hadeeth in his Sunan.

Shaykh Al-Uthaymeen said, "The reason why the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rinsed his mouth was because of the fat. It can be understood from this action that it is legislated to rinse the mouth from all foods which contain fat, regardless of whether they are drunk or eaten. Its good manners to rinse the mouth afterwards to remove the fat. If the substance is heavy in fat, then it is better to use the siwak. For this reason the scholars say:  it's sunnah to use siwak to remove any fat after eating if the smell of the mouth changed. [Sharh Saheeh Al-Bukahri ]
